On the occasion of the World Women’s Day, the Center for Roma Initiatives and Institute of Public Health, with financial support from CARE International – Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Ministry for Human and Minority Rights, on 07th of March of 2016 organized a street action within three Roma settlements: Settlement under Trebjesa, settlement Budo Tomovic and settlement Brlja in Niksic, during which a representative of the Institute of Public Health held lectures with the aim of emphasizing the importance of reproductive health and the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases as well as unwanted pregnancies.
After the lectures were done, representatives from the Center for Roma initiatives and Institute of Public Health shared roses along with preservatives to members of Roma and Egyptian population.
During the street action, we could conclude that there is still patriarchy present in Roma and Egyptian communities and that for female members of these two populations using of preservatives is still a taboo topic, which can be confirmed with the following comments: “The members of the Center for Roma Initiatives are familiar with our needs, how that comes that they are not ashamed to talk about this? “, “you could share roses without preservatives “, “Take these preservatives, you will need them! “, ” I do not sell myself for a rose and a condom! “.
In addition to these comments, a number of Roma and Egyptian women in the settlement under Trebjesa did not come out to take part in street action, as evidenced by the fact that even though they in advance had been informed what kind of action was to be held, they were not willing to take part in the same.
Some of the positive comments, which mainly came from male members of the mentioned communities and which we would stress are the following: “This is a very good lecture, some people have more than thirteen children because they do not know how to protect themselves”, “On this theme we must speak in public, it is not a shame”, “You should organize more actions like this one. “
