On 30/11/2015 for 15 officials from the Security Center of Tivat, Kotor and Herceg Novi a one-day seminar on: Sensitization of police officers to work with people of Roma and Egyptian nationality in cases of reporting of domestic violence and child arranged marriages was held. Officers had the opportunity to acquaint with the life stories of victims of domestic violence and of arranged marriages, as well as the consequences of their abuse. During the seminar they also got familiar with the regulatory frameworks and the responsibilities of the police and other bodies in work to combat these problems.
Through the discussion, we could conclude that among certain officers there were still present prejudices about members of Roma and Egyptian communities, as evidenced by comments such as: “arranged marriages are part of the tradition of Roma and Egyptians, they hide events within their community.” In addition officers consider that the wider community has drastic prejudices and stereotypes, such as: “It is Gypsy business; never mind, that these are gypsies; they are citizens of the last class in the country; that are dirty and do not care about hygiene, “etc.
A one-day seminar was held within the project “Through Regional Cooperation in Combating of Child, Forced, Arranged Marriages in Roma and Egyptian Communities” conducted by the Center for Roma Initiatives in cooperation with the International Police Association (IPA Montenegro) – Section Montenegro with the financial support of the US Embassy in Podgorica.
