On the International Day of the Fight Against Domestic Violence in Niksic, i.e. on 25/11/2015, a seminar for sensitization of 15 police officers to work with victims of domestic violence and child arranged marriages in Roma and Egyptian communities was held. The seminar was attended by the officials of the Police Administration, Security Center of Niksic with associated departments of Plužine and Šavnik (Department of criminal police, uniformed officers of the police station and officials of the Department of Border Police of the Security Center of Niksic). Officials had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with all aspects and procedures of the domestic violence and child, arranged marriages, as well as with pointing out of the existing prejudices and stereotypes prevailing among them when it comes to the Roma and Egyptian communities.
Through the discussion, in one hand we could conclude that there are still present prejudices about members of Roma and Egyptian communities among wider community, and they are also present among officers themselves, as evidenced by comments such as: “Roma are dirty, they commit most of the criminal acts, they do not want to work physical works, they are guilty of their children not attending the school” etc. On the other hand, through the creation of recommendations, they stressed that it is necessary for as larger number as possible of representatives from certain institutions (police, centers for social work, health care, prosecution and education) to undergo seminars such as this one, because it was shown that mutual cooperation in the prevention of certain problem is not enough developed.
A one-day seminar was held within the project “Through Regional Cooperation in Combating of Child, Forced, Arranged Marriages in Roma and Egyptian Communities” conducted by the Center for Roma Initiatives in cooperation with the International Police Association (IPA Montenegro) – Section Montenegro with the financial support of the US Embassy in Podgorica.
